Signals and Copy Trading: How They Work and What You Risk

Signals and copy trading both hand your decisions to someone else, and that is exactly where the risk sits.

Updated Sep 2026 · how we rate brokers

Copy trading means your account mirrors another trader's orders automatically

Copy trading is a setup where your broker account repeats the trades of another person, usually in real time and in proportion to your balance. You pick a trader from a list, set how much of your money follows them, and the platform opens and closes positions for you. That is the whole meaning: you are not analysing charts, you are renting someone else's decisions.

A forex signal works differently. Someone posts a call, say buy EUR/USD at a certain level with a stop below it, and you decide whether to place that trade yourself. Signals can arrive through a Telegram channel, a paid group, an app notification or a subscription service. Copy trading is automatic, signals are manual, and both leave the thinking to somebody you probably have never met.

In the Philippines this usually runs through a mobile app funded by GCash, Maya, InstaPay, PESONet, bank transfer or card. The convenience is real. So is the fact that a tap on your phone can move real pesos into a strategy you did not design.

The trader you copy keeps a share of the upside, and you keep all of the downside

Copy trading platforms typically pay the trader you follow through a performance fee or profit share, and the exact figure sits in the platform's own fee schedule, not in this guide. You carry the losses on your own capital in full. Nobody refunds you because the person you copied had a bad month.

Past results on a leaderboard tell you very little. A trader showing a strong run may be using heavy leverage, may have survived one lucky trend, or may have started recently. Short track records look impressive precisely because they are short. Look at how long the account has traded, how deep the drawdowns went, and whether the returns came from many small trades or one big bet.

Copy trading crypto works on the same principle with a different underlying market, and crypto moves around the clock with no session break. That suits some people and wrecks others. If you cannot explain in one sentence why the trader opened a position, you are following a personality, not a method.

Check the platform against the SEC Philippines list before you fund anything

The SEC Philippines publishes advisories against unregistered forex platforms and maintains a public list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph. Before you deposit a peso, search that list for the entity actually holding your money, not just the brand on the app icon. If it is not there, treat that as a stop sign rather than a detail.

Registration is not the same as a guarantee, and the reverse is also true: an unregistered operator gives you almost nowhere to go when withdrawals stall. Confirm the current position yourself, including whether the BSP has any role in the arrangement you are considering, because rules and advisories change.

Fund your account the way you would pay any stranger online. GCash, Maya, InstaPay and PESONet all leave a record, so keep screenshots of every transfer, the account name you paid, and the platform's stated funding page. If a support agent asks you to send money to a personal number instead, that is your answer.

Timing, leverage and peso costs decide whether the strategy even fits you

Forex sessions run on Philippine time whether or not the trader you copy is awake for them. Sydney trades 06:00 to 15:00 PHT, Tokyo 08:00 to 17:00, London 16:00 to 01:00, and New York 21:00 to 06:00. The busiest window locally is the London and New York overlap, 21:00 to 01:00 PHT, which is also when many Filipino followers are asleep.

That overlap matters if the strategy trades breakouts or news. Positions can open and close while you are in bed, and you will see the result in the morning. If you want to watch your money move, a session that lines up with your evening is easier to live with than one that runs at 3am.

Then there is the peso. Your account may be denominated in PHP or in a foreign currency, and every deposit, withdrawal and conversion can carry a cost set by the platform or your wallet provider. Read the funding page for the actual numbers rather than assuming they are small. Leverage deserves the same treatment: it multiplies losses as readily as gains, and the setting is usually yours to lower.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing more than you deposit. Most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
