Forex Scams in the Philippines and How to Check a Licence

Forex trading is legal in the Philippines, but only platforms registered with the SEC Philippines are legitimate.

Updated Sep 2026 · how we rate brokers

Yes, forex trading is legit, but the platform you use might not be

Forex trading itself is legal in the Philippines. What trips people up is the platform: the SEC Philippines has published advisories against unregistered forex platforms, so a slick app alone proves nothing.

Before you send money, check the entity behind the app on the SEC Philippines list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph. If the name on your deposit slip is not on that list, stop and ask why.

The regulator has also flagged that some entities may fall under BSP rules depending on what they actually do. Confirm the current position on both sec.gov.ph and the BSP before you assume a platform is fully covered.

Local scam patterns you will actually see

The most common pattern is the friendly recruiter on Facebook or Telegram who walks you through installing an app and funding it with GCash. The first withdrawal works, which builds trust, then a larger deposit gets frozen behind a sudden 'tax' or 'unlock fee'.

Another is the copy-trading group where a 'mentor' posts screenshots of wins and asks you to send funds to a personal GCash or Maya number. Legitimate platforms collect deposits through their own corporate accounts, not through an individual's e-wallet.

Watch for pressure to recruit friends, promised daily returns, and any request to move the conversation to a private chat. Those are social signals, not proof, but they cluster tightly around the scams reported locally.

How to check a licence in five steps

First, get the exact legal company name from the platform's terms page, not the brand name on the logo. Second, search that name on the SEC Philippines list at sec.gov.ph and read the registration details carefully.

Third, check whether the registration actually covers forex or investment solicitation, because a registered company can still be doing something it is not authorised for. Fourth, confirm the deposit channel: if the funding page or the GCash app shows a personal account name rather than the company, treat it as a red flag.

Fifth, look for published advisories against the platform on sec.gov.ph. If an advisory exists, do not deposit, no matter how well the app works or how long the withdrawals have been clearing.

Risk tools matter more than any 'top 10' list

Searching for a top 10 legit trading platforms will mostly surface affiliate pages, so treat those rankings as advertising. The useful question is whether the platform you are considering appears on the SEC Philippines list, and whether you understand the risk before you fund it.

A forex risk calculator helps you size a position from your account balance, your stop distance and the pip value of the pair. A forex risk management calculator does the same job with a slightly wider brief, often adding risk-reward and lot sizing.

You can run these numbers yourself before depositing anything. Knowing your maximum loss per trade in pesos is a better safety net than any ranking, and it costs nothing.

Timing, payments and the Philippine trading day

Philippine Time is UTC+8, so the sessions land at convenient hours: Sydney 06:00-15:00 PHT, Tokyo 08:00-17:00 PHT, London 16:00-01:00 PHT, and New York 21:00-06:00 PHT. The London and New York overlap runs 21:00-01:00 PHT, which is when liquidity is usually deepest.

Funding is usually quick because GCash, Maya, InstaPay and PESONet are widely supported, with bank transfer and card as alternatives. Speed of deposit says nothing about legitimacy, so verify the licence first and fund second.

Keep your transaction records. If something goes wrong, the SEC Philippines and your e-wallet provider will both want to see the trail.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing more than you deposit. Most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
